ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE AYURVEDIC DIET

The Ayurvedic Diet can be termed as an eating pattern that draws heavily from the principles of Ayurvedic medicine. It aims to balance the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) in your body. Each of these doshas is responsible for a specific physiological function.

How does it work?

As per Ayurveda, the universe is made up of 5 elements – Jala (water), Vayu (air), Teja (fire), Akash (space), and Prithvi (earth). The Ayurvedic diet is a plan that helps you set guidelines as to when, how, and what you should consume based on your dosha.

Some of the vital characteristics of each dosha are –

  1. Pitta

The Pitta dosha is responsible for thirst, hunger, and body temperature. The people of this dosha typically have a short temper and are of medium physical built. They may suffer from conditions such as heart disease, hypertension, and indigestion.

This dosha favors cooling and energizing foods, and limits nuts, seeds, and spices.

  1. Vata

The Vata dosha maintains movement and the electrolyte balance in your body. The people of this dosha are typically skinny, with a light frame. They may suffer from digestive issues, anxiety, and fatigue.

This dosha favors moist, warm, and grounding foods, and limits bitter herbs, raw vegetables, and dried fruits.

  1. Kapha

The Kapha dosha takes care of various joint functions. The people of this dosha typically have a sturdier frame. They may struggle with asthma, weight gain, diabetes, and depression.

This dosha favors legumes, fruits, and veggies, and limits heavy foods like oils, nuts, and seeds.

Benefits of the Ayurvedic Diet

  1. Promotes whole foods

The Ayurvedic diet promotes nutritious whole foods like fruits, vegetables, legumes, and grains. Simultaneously, it restricts processed foods which are associated with higher chances of cancer, heart disease, and even death.

  1. Enhances Mindfulness

Mindful eating emphasizes the minimizing of distractions at mealtime, to focus on the texture, taste, and smell of your food. Moreover, this practice also enhances self-control and helps cultivate a healthier relationship with food.

  1. Supports Wellness

The Ayurvedic lifestyle promotes harmony between your mind, body, and soul through exercise, diet, and adequate sleep.

Ayurvedic Diet in today’s context

Before cooking a meal, here are a few questions you can ask yourself –

  1. How far did my food travel?

The lesser distance your food has travelled, the healthier it is.

  1. How easily will it wash off?

Foods that can be easily washed off are more often than not detoxing meals.

  1. How early was this food plucked?

Knowing whether or not a food has been plucked at its prime is an essential skill. Some foods like bananas get nutritious as they develop darker spots, however, the majority of produce degrades with time.

  1. Is my food seasonal?

Seasonal produce is loaded with nutrients to naturally soothe the 3 doshas.

  1. Does my meal have all six tastes?

The Ayurvedic diet should have all 6 tastes – sweet, salty, bitter, sour, spicy, and astringent.
