Ayurvedic Remedies for Indigestion

Have you felt pain or discomfort in your upper abdomen, especially after eating? This may be caused by indigestion, when food is not digested properly. Extreme fullness, heartburn, and bloating are other symptoms of this condition. It also takes a toll on your digestive system and overall well being.

An Ayurvedic treatment for indigestion is effortless and natural. You will feel lighter, happier, and more energetic and productive on following these guidelines.

Take a look at five categories of indigestion, and their prescribed Ayurvedic diet below.

Remedy for Constipation

Mix together 1 teaspoon of Ghee with 1/2 a teaspoon of salt and 5/4 cups 0f warm water, and consume immediately. The ghee lubricates your intestinal walls which helps stools movement. The Butyrate acid it contains also has an anti-inflammatory effect. Moreover, the salt present naturally cleanses bacteria.

You can also try having a ripe banana with a hot beverage after dinner. The starchiness of the banana adds bulk to your stool. Meanwhile, the warm liquid stimulates stool movements. Fibrous foods and liquids are preferable.

Remember to include soaked figs or Anjeer, bael fruit, triphala, and china grass. All of these are fibrous and nutrient rich, and effectively ward away constipation.

Remedy for Bloating

Bloating is the accumulation of gas in the abdomen. This is often caused by a weak Agni, or digestive fire, or the presence of Ama or bio toxins. Excessive gas can be eliminated by warm fluids, certain spices, and freshly cooked food.

Fennel seeds or Anjeer are a popular tool to cure bloating. You can also chew on these seeds separately to reduce gas and bloating. Alternatively, stir 1 teaspoon of fennel seeds with 1 cup of boiling water and consume immediately.

Don’t forget to add it fresh ginger, hing (asafoetida), and a dash of rock salt for flavour.

Herbal teas such as mint can also aid flatulence. You can also try rosemary, fennel, green and black teas. Stay away from heavier forms with milk and sugar.

Remedy for Acidity

Acid refluxes and heartburn are common symptoms of Pitta aggravation. Fennel seeds, holy basil, and cloves are ideal in soothing acid reflexes. These spices also increase your saliva secretion which helps digestion. This is only one example of an Ayurvedic medicine for digestion and acidity.

Opt for cooling and alkaline liquids and foods. These include fresh coconut flesh, rice based dishes, and chutneys.

Astringent and bitter foods also enable Pitta balance. Try pomegranate, watermelon, honey dew melon, lettuce, and mangoes are some examples. Green leafy vegetables, split mung dals, and grains can be incorporated into your meals.

Avoid spicy, oily, or acidic foods, which react adversely with the digestive tract. For example, vinegar, tomatoes, citrus fruits, onion, garlic, and child peppers can aggravate Pitta levels.

Remedy for Diarrhoea

Your body needs plenty of fibre and liquids to battle diarrhoea. An example of a low calorie, light and digestible option is bottle gourd. In general, raw fruits and vegetables can help with adding bulk to the stool. However, most of them lose nutrients while cooking.

Fluids are necessary to heal your gut naturally. Plain water is the best recommended option. Additionally, buttermilk, tea, and fruit juices (especially pomegranate and apple) are helpful options. Ginger tea is another great option as it hydrates the body and replenishes nutrients. It is a natural detoxifier among spices.

Ayurveda, the ancient Indian science of healing, can do marvels in aiding bodily ailments. Indigestion can be broken into three categories – constipation, bloating, acid refluxes, and diarrhoea. Consuming fresh, home-cooked, fibrous and naturally seasoned foods, in addition to plenty of fluids, are a general thumb rule for proper digestion.

An Ayurvedic medicine for indigestion will work if you practice a healthy lifestyle alongside. These two can do wonders to your physical and mental well being.
